Consultations/Medical Care

Dr. LeMasters provides comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages. Regular eye exams are an invaluable tool in maintaining the health of your eyes by detecting and preventing disease. Some diseases develop slowly without causing pain or vision loss. Early detection of any problems can reduce the risk of further harm and allow for a choice of treatment options.

Glaucoma Therapy

Glaucoma cannot be prevented, and vision lost to it cannot be restored. Left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. For these reasons, regular eye exams and early detection are critical.

Dr. LeMasters is experienced in effective treatment regimens including prescription eye medications, glaucoma laser surgery, and incisional glaucoma filtering surgery.

Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a cloudy area in the normally clear lens in the front of the eye. Cataracts are caused by a chemical change of unknown origin in the eye, and cause blurred or distorted vision.

People at risk for developing cataracts are over 55 years old, have had eye injuries or disease, have a family history of cataracts, smoke cigarettes or use certain medications.

Symptoms include:

  • Blurred/hazy vision
  • Spots in front of the eye(s)
  • Sensitivity to glare
  • A feeling of "film" over the eye(s)
  • A temporary improvement in near vision

Diabetic Eye Care

Patients with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness, such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and glaucoma. These and other serious conditions often develop without vision loss or pain, so significant damage may be done to the eyes by the time the patient notices any symptoms. For this reason it is very important for diabetic patients to have their eyes examined once a year. Diagnosing and treating eye disease early can prevent vision loss. It is also important to maintain a steady blood-sugar level, take prescribed medications, follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly and avoid smoking.

Eyelid Surgery

Dr. LeMasters is experienced in plastic surgery on the eyelids and adjacent tissues for misalignment, skin cancers, and tear drainage problems.

  • Entropion: Inward turning of the lower eyelid. Entropion results from looseness of the lower eyelid that occurs with aging or scarring. Eyelashes then rub the eye, causing redness, irritation or ulcers. Outpatient surgical correction can repair this.

  • Ectropion: Outward turning of the lower eyelid. Ectropion results from stretching of the lower eyelid with age allowing the lid to droop downward and turn outward. Symptoms include burning, watering, redness and blurred vision. Surgical corresction tightens the eyelid.

  • Ptosis: Upper eyelid drooping. Ptosis may appear shortly after birth (congenital) or as a result of aging (involutional). Ptosis may limit the field of peripheral vision and produce an uneven appearance. Surgery may correct this problem by shortening the muscle that opens the eyelid.

  • Blepharoplasty: Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient's field of vision.

YAG Laser Posterior Capsulotomy

Around the human crystalline lens is an enveloping clear membrane referred to as the lens capsule. "Like the skin around a grape."

During cataract surgery the majority of this clear membrane is left intact while removing the clouded lens contents "the pulp." The remaining capsular bag safely holds and centers the intraocular lens implant.

It is not uncommon however, that subsequent to successful cataract surgery some weeks, months, or years later this membrane gradually clouds over, interfering with vision. Should this occur a relatively simple laser surgery done with a YAG laser will permanently clear an unobstructed pathway to the retina allowing, once again, clear and sharp vision. This procedure is done painlessly with only a numbing drop allowing the patient to immediately return to full unrestricted activity.

Humphrey Visual Field Testing

Simply stated: The Gold Standard

Humphrey Visual Field Testing is a sophisticated computer-driven algorithm of interactive visual field testing that is most commonly used to diagnose and monitor glaucoma progression. It is also extremely useful in detecting neurological insults on the visual sensory system.

With the newest software, this test is very brief, requiring about 6 or so minutes per eye. Dr. LeMasters' experienced Ophthalmic Technicians will guide patients through the exam comfortably.

Heidelberg Optic Nerve Tomography

Glaucoma is a common eye disease with progressive damage to the optic nerve and resultant visual field damage. The Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph HRT II is a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope that provides objective measurements of the optic nerve head.

This advanced imaging device allows quantitative measurements allowing both earlier diagnosis of and a sensitive monitor for progression of glaucoma. This test compliments the clinical eye exam and retinal photography in the evaluation of the optic nerve health.

The patient's experience is simply that of having a video movie of their eye. Dr. LeMasters' practice was the first in the area to acquire this state of the art technology.

Zeiss IOL Master and A-Scan Biometry

Zeiss IOL Master | Sunbury | Shamokin Dam

Because every person's eyes are unique, like fingerprints, it is important to determine the appropriate specifications of the IOL to be implanted during cataract surgery. The Zeiss IOL Master ® now provides physicians with information on key ocular measurements, making it possible to choose the right IOL for each patient. The non-contact IOL Master is the only product in the world that makes these "optical biometry" examinations possible and has proven to be five times more accurate than traditional technologies such as ultrasound.
